It is a direct fit replacement for the original sensor with no modification required.

This Genuine OEM part fits the rear lower position and is specific to XLT, Limited, Platinum, and King Ranch trim levels on the Expedition and Explorer, and Select/XLT, Reserve, and Black Label trims on the Navigator — vehicles must be equipped with the Hands-Free Power Liftgate feature. Compatible engines include the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and 3.5L EcoBoost High Output V6 on the Expedition and Navigator, and the 2.3L EcoBoost I4 and 3.0L EcoBoost V6 on the Explorer. This part does not fit Base, Interceptor, ST, or Timberline trims.
