- Jack
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Torque wrench
- Tie rod end puller tool
- Tie rod end removal tool
- Thread locker
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time Needed: 2-3 hours
Steps:
- Raise the vehicle using a jack and place it securely on jack stands.
- Remove the wheel on the side where the tie rod end is being replaced using a lug wrench.
- Locate the tie rod end on the steering rack and use a tie rod end puller tool to separate it from the steering knuckle. Keep the nut aside in a safe place.
- Use a tie rod end removal tool to remove the tie rod end from the steering rack. Keep the nut aside in a safe place.
- Install the new tie rod end onto the steering rack and tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specifications using a torque wrench.
- Thread locker should be applied to the threads of the tie rod end.
- Reinstall the tie rod end onto the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specifications using a torque wrench.
- Reinstall the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications using a torque wrench.
- Repeat the process on the other side of the vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle and test drive it to make sure the tie rod ends are functioning properly.
